Albert C. Bates
(1857-1931)

Albert Chapin Bates was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1857, the son of Levi and Mary Bates. By the age of 23 (in 1880) he had left home and had moved in with his brother Charles in New York City, where he took a job as bookkeeper. In the September 1928 issue of Rocks & Minerals he wrote: "In so far as my business life would permit, I have for 45 years [i.e. since 1883] been actively engaged in collecting specimens of crystallized minerals. By collecting I mean the visiting of mineral localities affording specimens; by exchanging; and by buying of regular dealers." One of his collecting specialties was quartz.

By 1886 he had married (his wife's name was Ella) and moved to Newark, New Jersey, where his son Richard was born in 1887 and where he lived out the rest of his life, working variously as a secretary for a refining company, a clerk for a steel-making firm, and as an employee of a hardware store in New York City. An 1890-1891 Newark City directory has him at 320 Roseville Avenue, the address on his mineral labels, and he was still there as of the 1920 census. In 1916 he was elected to membership in the Newark Mineralogical Society (at the fifth meeting of that organization). Around 1930, at age 73 and widowed, he was experiencing health problems and had moved in temporarily with his daughter Florence at 320 4th avenue in Newark. But he soon returned to his previous address until his death on May 5, 1931. Therefore his labels may date anywhere from 1886 to 1931.
