Jack Hinegardner
(1917-1994)

John ("Jack") Henry Hinegardner, Jr. was born in Pennsylvania on December 6, 1917, the son of Margaret and John Hinegardner,Sr., a farmer. He attended high school for four years in Holmes County, Ohio, then served as a sargeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. At that time his occupational skills were listed as "Gunsmith (Armorer), Diesel Mechanic (Automobile mechanic, Diesel engine), Camera Repairman (still camera), Instrument Repairman, Non-electrical (Instrument maker), Utility Repairman (Mechanic, general), Equipment Maintenance Man, and Motion Picture equipment." He married Ellen ---- (1925-1995).

Following the war, he attended college and ultimately became a professor of paleontology. After retiring from teaching (in the 1960's) he opened a mineral shop in Silverton, Colorado, which he ran during the summer months, and a second shop on Highway 60, east of Phoenix, Arizona on the way toward Apache Junction and the Superstition Mountains, which he operated during the winter months.

Hinegardner had a showcase in his shop displaying mineral specimens from his personal collection, set up right next to a showcase of his specimens for sale, which was not a good idea because his personal specimens were always better than the ones he had for sale, and that discouraged sales. But he didn't seem to care, and enjoyed showing off his collection. He died in Phoenix on June 14, 1994 and, by virtue of having been a veteran, is buried with his wife in National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix.
