Edward R. Hickey
(1894-1983)

Edward Ringgold Hickey was born in Woodville, Wilkinson County, Mississippi on February 15, 1894, the son of Josie Isbell and Artemas Shattuck Hickey, a mining engineer. Artemas and Josie had been married in Stockbridge, Michigan in 1893, but apparently Edward was born during a trip to Mississippi the following year. As of 1900 they were still living in Michigan with Josie's father, but by 1910 they had settled in the Los Angeles, California area where Artemas worked for local mining companies. It is surely his father's occupation that exposed young Edward to minerals and inspired him to collect.

Edward's 1917 World War I draft registration card gives his address as 2324 S. Hope Street in Los Angeles, correllating with the address on his labels (2323 S. Hope Street). He listed his occupation as a self-employed armature winder, and stated that he had suffered the total loss of his left eye, and the vision in his right eye was "impaired." The heading on his label ("Rock & Mineral Specimens") suggests that he was dealing in mineral specimens at that time, and the "Sr." following his name dates the label to after his son's birth in 1919.

Though single in 1917, he appears in Venice, Los Angeles County, California on the 1920 census with his wife Marguerite (Reed or Martin) and 5-month-old son Edward, Jr., listing his occupation as proprietor of a motor repair shop. On the 1930 census he is shown living in Los Angeles, California (at 1131 West 24th Street) with Marguerite and Edward, Jr. His occupation is listed as proproetor of the Dynamo Electrical Shop. He died on June 22, 1983.
