Ralph B. Erskine
(1912-2004)

Ralph Beaumont Erskine Jr., born August 31, 1912, the son of Ralph Sr. (b. 1889) and Evangeline Mary Paquin (1882-1965). He moved to Gardiner around 1932 with his family and attended school there. He must have been interested in minerals from an early age, and specialized particularly in (probably self-collected) Maine minerals. His first advertisement ("Introducing the Beau-Mont Industries") in Rocks & Minerals appeared in December 1940, offering a set of 20 2 x 3-inch specimens of Maine pegmatite minerals for $1.50. In the Gardiner City Directories for 1933-1939 he is listed working as a clerk in his father's store, "The R B Store," but in the 1941 directory he is listed with his wife Ruth E. (a librarian at the Gardiner Public Library) as dealing in "minerals" from his residence on Kingsbury Street. His early 1941 ads indicate that he had a showroom, with "excellent specimens" of a variety of pegmatite minerals, as well as faceted stones. The business must have been short-lived, though, as he had no ads after July 1942, and he does not appear in the 1945 directory or thereafter, nor does his wife. (Perhaps he was drafted.) Ralph B. Erskine jr. died in Kerrville, Texas on March 23, 2004.
