J. Richard Taylor
(fl. 1880s- )
J. Richard Taylor was the U.S. Examinig Surgeon in the town of Breckenridge, Colorado, and apparently also provided assaying services. The handwriting style suggests the 1880s, and the Robert E. Lee mine in Leadville (source of the specimen described by the label) was discovered in 1877 and was active in the 1880s. In one 24-hour period in 1877 it yielded 95 tons of cerargyrite ("horn silver") ore worth over $118,000. Some of the ore was virtually pure cerargyrite worth $12,000/ton, as shown by this label.
