John C. Pohl
(1874-1951)

John Charles Pohl (Jr.) was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on February 19, 1874, the son of Ida Reed and John C. Pohl, Sr., a carpenter and railroad foreman. He worked as head of the pattern department of the Lehigh Valley Railroad shops until his retirement in the mid-1940s. He became interested in collecting minerals rather late in life (in the early 1930s) but soon became widely known for his excellent collection of several thousand specimens. Included in his collection were many specimens from the collection of the prominent British collector John Calvert (1825-1897), acquired via New York mineral dealer Martin Ehrmann in 1938. Arthur Montgomery, Assistant Professor at Lafayette College, was his mentor in collecting. Pohl also wrote occasional articles about mineral discoveries in popular magazines. Neither he nor his two sisters ever married.

Pohl was actively involved with the Geology Department at Lafayette College, and was elected an honorary member of the John Markle Society and the Geology Club. Following his death on October 30, 1951, his entire mineral collection and cabinets, plus shells, biological apparatus, books and $2000 for maintenance of the collection, were donated to Lafayette College.
