Ernest Weidhaas
(1888-1974)

Gustav Otto Ernest Weidhaas was born in New York City on July 29, 1888, the son of German immigrants Marie and Otto Weidhaas, a janitor. Otto died ca. 1905, and Ernest and his brother Adolph became their widowed mother's main source of support. Ernest was working as a real estate broker by 1910 (at age 21), and was employed by the A. F. Fush Company (1917), in Manhattan. With his wife Cecilia, he lived at 408 W. 42nd Street, and had children Cecilia G. (1917) and Ernest R. (1925). He was an active, well-known mineral and meteorite collector in his day, and a prominent member of the New York Mineralogical Society and the Westchester Mineral and Gem Society. (He dressed as Santa Claus for a holiday celebration with Martin Ehrmann's family.) Ernest Weidhaas died August 1974 in Pelham Manor, Westchester County, New York.
