Immediately following graduation he emigrated to America, becoming a mining engineer at the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company (1904 to 1906). He then worked at the Phelps Dodge Sierra de Cobre mine in Cananea, Mexico (1906), at the Capillitas copper mine in Muschaca, Argentine (1907), as a mining engineer for Phelps Dodge in Bisbee (1908), as a Mine Superintendant for Phelps Dodge in Courtland, Arizona (1909-10), as Assistant Superintendant for Phelps Dodge at the Copper Queen mine in Bisbee (1911), as General manager of the Old Dominion Mining Co. in Globe, Arizona (1912-17), as Mine Manager for Phelps Dodge Corp. in New York (1918-1919), and as General Manager and Vice President of Phelps Dodge Corp., Arizona (1920-1937), serving as Vice President (1937-1946) and Director (1940-1960). He was also President and Director of the Apache Powder Company (1929-1949), and Vice President and General Managing Director of the Tucson, Cornelia and Gila Bend Railroad (1930s).
