Otto Belger
(1914-2002)

Otto Belger was born in 1914 in Friedrichstal/Saar and died in 2002 in Karlsruhe, both cities located in southwestern Germany. Otto was a dentist by profession and lived for most of his life in Karlsruhe. In the early 1970's he became interested in minerals, and joined the German “Association of the Friends of mineralogy and Geology” (VFMG). In the local section of VFMG in Karlsruhe he met mineralogical enthusiasts like Prof. Rudolf Metz of Karlsruhe University, the chemist Dr. Hans Oehlmann and the architect Fritz Schlee. He was also in contact with the engineer Fritz Blatter (qv), who is a specialist in Norwegian minerals.

Otto made mineral collecting trips to the Black Forest, located just south of Karlsruhe, but soon felt the urge to range farther afield, and from 1973 to 1982 he visited southern Norway in his summer holidays, together with his family. During these visits he collected superb specimens of monazite, ilmenite, columbite, zircon and anatase, with special attention to the rare earth minerals. Otto could also be seen regularly at mineral shows, including those in Karlsruhe, Bretten, Zurich and Munich. His collection comprises approximately 500 specimens, from thumbnail to cabinet size. He leaves behind his widow Ingrid, his sons Volker and Udo and 5 grandchildren. The Otto Belger collection remains (as of 2005) in the hands of his family.
