 Belmont Abbey College
(1876-    )

Founded in 1876 be Benedictine monks, Belmont Abbey College is dedicated to educating primarily undergraduate students from diverse religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Inspired by its Catholic heritage, Belmont Abbey College considers itself one of the country's leading, private liberal arts colleges. Located in Belmont, North Carolina just a few miles outside of Charlotte, the sprawling 650-acre campus is home to the College, the Monastery and the Abbey Basilica. The Geoscience Department and the college's mineral collection were for many years under the direction of the enthusiastic mineral collector and educator John "Jack" Hanahan (1924-2001).
