Louis W. Vance
(1896-1965)

Louis Whaley Vance was born in Osceola, Missouri on April 2, 1896, the son of Francis Powell Russell and Milton Callender Vance. Milton worked as a linotype operator for a newspaper in St. Louis in 1900, and in San Antonio, Texas in 1910. In 1917 Louis was working for a music company in San Antonio, but by 1920 Milton had opened his own printing shop in Pasadena, California, and Louis was working there as a Linotype operator. By 1930 both father (widowed) and son were working as printers for a newspaper in Pasadena; Louis apparently never married.

Louis Vance wrote several articles for Rocks & Minerals, including "Collecting apatite crystals at Durango, Mexico" (1949), "A day at the Bilbao mine, Zacatecas, Mexico" (1949) and "A visit to Los Lamentos, Mexico" (1949). Vance and his collecting partner, Earl Calvert (1904-1964) visited Mexico on many collecting trips, taking the train much of the way.

Louis Vance died June 5, 1965, in California. His collection was bequeathed to Pasadena City College, where the bulk of it was sold off to provide funds for the Geology Department.
