Alphonse Meillet
(fl.1842-1867)

Alphonse Meillet, French chemist, mineralogist and archeologist in Poitiers, was the author of Une excursion minéralogique en Limousin, (1858), "Minéralogie du Bassin Paris" (1842, in Revue Scientifique), and numerous articles in the French Journal de Pharmacie et de Chemie in the 1840s. In 1856 he patented a method for manufacturing emery from a mix of minerals. He also made archeological contributions with articles such as "De la Fabrication des poteries dans l'antiquité, au point de vue technique, par A. Meillet archéologue à Poitiers" (1867).

The Mineralogical Record - Alphonse Meillet Label from the Carnegie Museum collection (CM1935), also accompanied by the label of French mineral dealer Émile Bertand (1844-1909), suggesting that perhaps Bertrand purchase all or part of Meillet's collection.
