Martin Cuesta
(1889-1968)

Martin M. Cuesta (Marcelo Muņoz Cueste) was born in Matanzas, Cuba on April 26, 1889. He first settled in Longmire Springs, Washington in 1913, where he worked as a carpenter; it was there he married his wife, Anna H. In 1920 he was working as a caretaker and cook in a hotel in Mt. Ranier, Washington. By 1930 he and his wife had moved to Lemon Cove, California where they worked in a hotel. By the 1940s he was listing himself as a "rancher" on the voter registration rolls for San Luis Obispo County, California.

In 1948 Cuesta was the proprietor of the Calico Mountains Trading Post, located 1 mile west of Yermo and 11 miles east of Barstow, California on highway 91. He advertised in Rocks & Minerals in 1948, offering desert gems, minerals, Indian relics, curios, antiques, etc. from ghost towns, mines, Death Valley and other places.

In the late 1950s and 1960s Cuesta worked mining a small fire opal claim near Oatman, Arizona (the claim is held today by Don Nelson, Golden Valley, Arizona). He charged visitors $1.50 a day to collect there. He and his wife owned a trailer home which they would park with friends (the Hardys) each summer in Topaz, California while on collecting trips.

Martin Cuesta died in Los Angeles County, California on August 9, 1968; he had been living since the 1950s in Kingman, Arizona, near his fire opal claim.
