Heinz Meixner
(1908-1981)

Heinrich Hermann ("Heinz") Meixner was born in Graz, Austria on November 4, 1908, the son of Bertha and Dr. Adolf Meixner, a zoologist. He became interested in mineralogy during his school years. At the University in Graz he studied under Prof. Angel, and under Prof. Friedrich in 1930-1936. In Leoben in 1935 he took his examination to obtain his teaching certificate in natural history and chemistry. In 1938 he studied with Prof. Correns at the Institute in Rostock, and thereafter was appointed Curator of Mineralogy and Petrology at the Natural History Museum. During World War II he worked as a military geologist in Norway, and was held as a prisoner of war in 1946-1947.

In 1948 Meixner was hired as an economic mineralogist for the Hüttenberg mines, where he made the acquaintance of Mine Director Karl Tausch, one of the foremost mineral collectors in Austria at that time. In 1956 he joined the Montanistische College in Leoben, and in 1969 he was appointed Full Professor in Mineralogy, Petrology and Economic Geology at the Institute for Mineralogy at the University of Salzburg. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Austrian Mineralogical Society. Through his initiative the Mineralogy and Geology Study Group of the Scientific Society of Carinthia was established, as well as the journal He died in Salzburg, Austria on December 19, 1981.
