Grace Dearborn
(1891-1980)

Grace Gregory Douglas was born in Winthrop, Massachusetts on January 21, 1891, the daughter of Canadian immigrants Mary J., and George A. Douglas, a house carpenter. She worked as a schoolteacher until 1913, when she married James Marshall Dearborn, a librarian at the Boston Atheneum. They had four children: Marjorie Kent Dearborn (1914), Stanley Douglas Dearborn (1916), B. Shirley Dearborn (1920/1) and James Marshall Dearborn, Jr. (1930).

Grace Dearborn served as a Girl Scout leader and official for 28 years, beginning in 1930, and as a mineral badge councilor for the Boy Scouts. Over the years she gave innumerable talks, classes and lectures about minerals to various church groups, school groups, mineral clubs, youth camps, etc. Her travels took her across the U.S. 15 times, and also to Mexico, Alaska and Canada. She was a charter member of the Boston Mineral Club and held office almost every year for over 25 years; as of 1960 she was the only female past-president of the Boston Mineral Club, and was vice president of the Eastern Federation of Mineral and Gem Societies.

She had a mineral collection of about 8,000 specimens filling eight large display cases in her home. Two large cabinets of 50 drawers each contained her Dana study collection. She died on August 10, 1980, at the age of 89, in Boston (Newton). The collection was dispersed after her death by Philip Scalisi.
