Robert H. Ebel
(1916-2000)

Robert Henry Ebel was born in New Haven, Connecticut on October 18, 1916, the son of Elsie K. and Fred C. Ebel, a draftsman for a firearms company. He graduated from New Haven High School in 1935 and enrolled at Yale University, where he received his B.S. degree in Applied Chemistry in 1938. He continued in Graduate School, working part-time in 1940 as a machinist for a firearms company, probably the company his father worked for. In 1941 he received his PhD in Chemistry with a thesis(?) on "The action of iminoesters on diamines."

Taking a position as research chemist in the Organic Chemistry Division of the American Cyanamid Company in 1941, he rose to Director of the Process Development Research Division in 1956 and Manager of the Refinery Chemical Research and Development Division in 1960. He was a member of several professional societies, and worked in the fields of mineralogy, rubber chemicals, pharmaceutical chemicals, and catalysts. During his career he was granted a number of chemical patents.

He died in Riverside, Connecticut on May 6, 2000. His mineral collection had been purchased long before his death (possibly in the 1950s or 1960s) by Neil Wintringham (1922-2009) in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
