Hermann Siegmund
(1898-1991)

Austrian collector Hermann Siegmund earned his medical degree in the 1930s and became a specialist in gynecology and obstetrics. He settled in Vienna where he served as a professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. He also ran a private practice from his large apartment in Vienna, located as Alserstrasse 25.

Aesthetic minerals were his specialty for many years. Although his collection was not very large (about 750 specimens and some uncataloged material), the collection was conspicuous for its many excellent pieces from around the world, ranking it as one of the finest collections in Austria in the second half of the 20th century. For instance, he was able to buy beautiful minerals from the Umrath collection (in Graz, Austria). Highlights included unusually rich specimens of Gold from Transylvania, beautiful native silvers and various gem minerals, especially blue topaz from Murzinka, Ural Mountains. He was in contact with the most important collectors in Vienna and the surrounding area (Karl Kontrus, Robert Metzger and Emil Thaller).

Siegmund was married and had one daughter. He died on March 6, 1991; shortly before and after his death the minerals were sold individually and distributed to collectors and museums worldwide. Some specimens went to the US (for example, a Kongsberg Silver Siegmund number 220 now in the University of Arizona Mineral Museum, cat. no. 18325) and a large gold specimen that first came to the University of Arizona collection and then was traded or sold to a private American collection. An attractive, large head-size azurite from Tsumeb (Siegmund no. 442) is now in the Italian private collection of Adalberto Giazotto.
