 Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique

The Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique (CEA) (=French Atomic Energy Commission) was established in 1945 by General Charles Degaulle. French prospectors working for the CEA scoured France and the world for deposits of uranium, and in the course of their work they brought home thousands of mineral specimens. In 1949 the Mineralogy Department of the CEA was founded to study and analyze these rocks and minerals, and build an important mineral reference collection. Prominent French mineralogists who worked in this department include Jacqueline Sarcia, Jean Chervet, Jean Béhier, Georges Branche, Pierre Agrinier, Jacques Geffroy and Claud Guillemin, among others.
