Roby Buchanan
(1903-1974)

Roby Milton Buchanan was a gem cutter and mineral dealer in Hawk and Bakersville, North Carolina (just north of Spruce Pine). He was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina on June 8, 1903, the son of Judith Juda Burleson and Albert Carl Buchanan, a farmer. He married Minerva Silvers in Tennessee in 1924, and they had two sons: Richard Buchanan (1933-1992) and James Harmon Buchanan (born January 5, 1925; died May 17, 1978). James married Margaretha C. ___, and together James and Margaretha worked as goldsmiths in Roby's shop, "Gems by Roby." They advertised "Mineral specimens of all kinds," but specialized in lapidary and jewelry. Following Minerva's death in 1966, Roby married Minewa "Gazzie" McKinney, who remained with him until his death in Spruce Pine, North Carolina on October 21, 1974.
