Marcus Bondi
(1787-1863)

Marcus (Mordochai) Wolf Bondi, Jewish mineral dealer and scholar, was born in Dresden, Germany on June 16, 1787, the son of Esther Lucka and Wolf Simon Bondi. He earned his PhD at the University of Halle, and became a "private scholar" and lexicographer as well as a mineral dealer and mineralogist. He traveled to Sweden, England and Italy to acquire specimens for his business. (Not to be confused with Dr. Lothar Bondy, meteorite dealer in Prague and Vienna.)

Bondi died in Dresden on August 7, 1863, at the age of 76 years (Dresden death certificate). Following his death, his sister Clara Bondi (1795-1869; she is sometimes incorrectly referred to as his "widow") and two of his nieces contributed 1,000 Thalers to establish a scholarship in his name at the Freiberg Mining Academy. It was to provide for impoverished students irrespective of their nationality or religion. Administered as the Bondi'sche Stiftung ("Bondi Foundation") by the professors of mineralogy (initially by August Breithaupt), it provided student stipends from 1866 to 1918, at which time the fund contained approximately 3,500 Marks. Payouts were made annually on Bondi's birthday. (It appears to have been discontinued after World War I).
