Ludwig Wilhelm Schaufuss
(1833-1890)

Ludwig Wilhelm Schaufuss, self-taught German naturalist and specimen dealer, was born in Greiz, Germany on August 24, 1833, the son of Karl Friedrich Schaufuss, a wealthy manufacturer; he died of influenza on July 16, 1890 in Dresden. He attended tghe Erste Burgerschule in Leipzing and continued his education working for the die and drug company of Christian Abecken in Dresden. He became fluent in Latin, French, Italian and Spanish.

Schaufuss worked as a researcher mainly in zoology (especially entomology) and is said to have discovered over 1,000 new species of insects. He mastered the art of taxidermy and, with his wife, sold specimens and collections worldwide.

In 1873 the Leipziger Zeitung mentions "three natural history collections from Dr. W. Schaufuss in Dresden." In 1874, the Zeitschrift für mathematischen und naturwissenschaftlichen mentioned that in 1873 "Schaufuss in Dresden" had provided small mineral collections for teaching use in schools. Bericht über die Verwaltung der Königlichen Sammlungen für Kunst (1883), mentions that in 1880 "den Herren Dr. Schaufuss" contributed mineralogical books to the library of the Royal Collection of Art and Science in Dresden. In 1888 the Rheinische Blätter für Erziehung und Unterricht refers to the "Schaufuss'schen Firma" as a source for all manner of natural history and even ethnographic items.

Schaufuss attempted to build a museum in which to display his enormous natural history collections, but went broke in the process.
