August Schlickum
(1867-1946)

August Schlickum, a German schoolteacher and naturalist, was born in Winningen, Germany on August 7, 1867, the son of Mathilde Berninger and Oskar Schlickum, a pharmacist and amateur botanist (as was his grandfather, Julius Schlickum). He began collecting specimens of plants and (probably) minerals and fossil in elementary school, while under the private tutelage of his father.

Schlickum studied natural sciences and mathematics at the universities of Bonn, Zürich, Berlin and Marburg, receiving his teaching degree at the latter institution in 1893. He then served as an assistant under Arthur Meyer at the botanical institute in Marburg, receiving his PhD from Philipps University in 1895. This was followed by work as an instructor at schools in Aachen (1896) Essen (1897-1898) and Düsseldorf (1898-1899). From 1899 to 1932 he was a gymnasium teacher in Cologne.

In 1905 Schlickum married Agnes Wilhelmine Jaconsen in Norway, and together they had one son, Wilhelm Richard Schlickum, who became a well-known amateur paleontologist.

In addition to his duties as a teacher, Schlckum carried out research in the fields of geology, paleontology and botany, collecting specimens in each field, including mineral specimens. In collaboration with Wiesbaden physician Karl Touton, he participated in scientific investigations of the Rhineland and the Allgäu. He supplied Touton with many Hieracium specimens from the Rhine area and was instrumental in the naming of a number of taxa within the genus. The subspecific epithet of schlickumianum honors his name.

Some of his published works include Lehrbuch der Chemie und Mineralogie sowie der Elemente der Geologie : für die oberen Klassen der Oberrealschulen und Realgymnasien (1907) (a textbook of chemistry and mineralogy as elements of geology), and Einführung in die Chemie und Mineralogie für die Untersekunda der Oberrealschule (1908) (an introduction to chemistry and mineralogy for the sixth year of secondary school). He died in Cologne on May 28, 1946.
