A. Joseph Alessi
(1908-1979)

Anjelo Joseph Alessi was a mineral dealer and lapidary supplier in Chicago, Illinois, originally located at 618 West 25th Place, and later on Highland Avenue in Lombard, Illinois. He was born in Italy on March 9, 1908, and in 1929 married a woman names Catherine. As of 1930 he was working as a "bank man" in a book bindery, and living with Joseph Alessi (an older relative). His name first appears in Rocks & Minerals as author of a short half-page note on "Serpentine at Ishpeming, Michigan" in January 1936; he identifies himself as being associated with the "Amateur Geologist Association, Chicago, Ill." In July 1937 he was the author of another article, "Some minerals of Ishpeming, Michigan," and is "Secretary, Amateur Geologist Association, Chicago, Ill." He bagan advertising in Rocks & Minerals in June 1937 and continued until September 1956. His first ad offered:

"Fine assortment of 25 different mineral and ore specimens. Each numbered and in separate compartment in gift box. $1 postpaid. A. Joseph Alessi, 618 W. 25th Pkace, Chicago, Ill. Write for prices on larger specimens."

Angelo Joseph Alessi died in Lombard, Illinois in September 1979.
