Ulrich  Burchard
(1944-2015)

Ulrich ("Uli") Christoph Burchard was a mineral collector, instrument collector, author and part-time dealer in Freising, Germany; born January 12, 1944 in Freising. He earned his PhD (Dr.rer.nat) from the University of Munich in 1972 (thesis: Genesis of the Scheelite Deposit of King Island, Tasmania), then worked as a uranium exploration geologist in Australia, Canada, Algeria, Argentina and Germany from 1972 to 1981. He first discovered his interest in minerals at the Munich Show in 1965--when it consisted of only 15 dealers in the back rooms of a pub.

Since 1982 Uli and his wife Karin were the proprietors of Mineral Exquisit, specializing in mineral specimens and rare antique mineralogical instruments. They created a series of exacting replicas of three or four historical goniometers of various types that are now highly collectible.

Uli was also the author of the book Mineral Museums of Europe (1986) with Rainer Bode, and several articles in the Mineralogical Record, including "The Mineralogical Cabinet of the Observatory of Kremsmünster, Austria" (1986), "The Mineralogical Cabinet of Teyler's Museum, Haarlem, Netherlands" (1987), "The Mineralogical Museum at Marburg, West Germany" (1987), "The History and Apparatus of Blowpipe Analysis" (1994)(Best Article of the Year Award), "History of the Development of the Crystallographic Goniometer" (1998) "The Sclerometer and the Determination of the Hardness of Minerals" (2004), and an article on "The Groth & Krantz collection of 743 wooden crystal models, 1880."

In recent years he had helped to mount several displays of beautiful antique mineralogical instruments at the Munich Show.

He died on February 23, 2015, following a long battle with an infection.
