John N.  Trainer
(1876-1953)

John Newlin Trainer Jr., was born April 8, 1876 in Trainer, Pennsylvania, the son of John Newlin Trainer, Sr. and Hannah Booth. He graduated from Harvard in 1900, and is listed as a publisher in the 1910 Manhattan census (he had moved to New York by 1905 when his daughter Amy was born, and later lived in Brewster, New York). He married Caroline Browning, and together they had two sons: John Newlin Trainer (III) and Robert B. Trainer.

He founded the Trainer Investment Council in New York City and also dealt in minerals for many years. In 1943 he is known to have purchased the extensive garnet collection of Harry Warford of Philadelphia in January of that year. He specialized in the minerals of the Tilly Foster mine and in garnets. In 1949 John N. Trainer's extensive collection of minerals from the Tilly Foster mine in Brewster, New York (a collection begun in 1935) was acquired by the New York State Museum. Trainer died in New York on December 17, 1953.
