Raymond Lasmanis of Rainier, Washington was born in Riga, Latvia in 1938 and emmigrated to the U.S. with his parents in 1950. The family settled in New York, where Raymond's interests turned to geology and minerals. His early mentors were Peter Zodac, David Seaman and Joe Albertson.
After receiving his BSc degree in Geology from the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, he enjoyed a successful career as an exploration geologist, and from 1982 to 2001 he served as Washington State Geologist. He is a past President of the National Friends of Mineralogy and is currently President and Director of the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals.
His "R. & B. Lasmanis" labels stand for Raymond and his wife Betty, who were divorced in 1969; labels from subsequent years (catalog numbers 1183 through 3070) carry the title "Raymond Lasmanis Collection."
