(1871-    )

The Museo de Mineralogia y Geologia, Universidad Nacional in Cordoba, Argentina, was founded April 6, 1871, when the German scientist Dr. Alfred Stelzner exhibited European mineral specimens, rocks and fossils at the Colegio Nacional de Monserrat. Since then this institution has occupied a prominent place in the development of the geologic sciences in Argentina. Their collections (3000 specimens of 650 species on exhibit) preserve specimens of minerals and rocks acquired in the course of these investigations. The mineral specimens on exhibit are arranged accordoing to the system of Strunz (1957, 1997). The classification is updated according to the nomenclature approved by the Commission of New Minerals and Mineral Names of the International Mineralogical Association(I.M.A.).
