 Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences
(1861-    )

The Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences in Buffalo, New York was founded in 1861. The Museum's collections reflect the Niagara Region and key aspects of distant lands and peoples. Its scientific research illuminates the ancient history of North America and the North Atlantic region as well as phenomena in the natural sciences from around the world. The Buffalo Geological Society was originally formed in 1938 as the Geological Section of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences. The Society today administers the Buffalo Museum of Science and the Tiff Nature Preserve, and publishes the Bulletin of the Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences.

The Buffalo Museum of Science maintains a fine gem and mineral exhibit. A variety of minerals are on display in a context which provides vital information needed to appreciate them. Displays help visitors to understand what a mineral is (and is not), identification traits, what crystals are and how they form. Fine specimens portray the mineral heritage of Western New York, New York State, and Ontario. The interesting variability of certain minerals is illustrated using quartz, calcite, gypsum and hematite. A gem display traces specimens to their origins as natural mineral crystals, and another shows beautiful objects crafted from minerals by artisans. A systematic array of hundreds of fine mineral specimens provides a classification of minerals according to their chemical composition and crystal structure.
