Atomic Energy Commision Antsirabe

The French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique ("CEA") exploited uranium from the regions of Folakara and Tranomaro, Madagascar during the period from the late 1930's through the 1950's, until market and political conditions caused a shift in French production to other francophone African countries including Niger and Gabon. The company maintained a laboratory in Antsirabe, Madagascar, probably to serve the mining operation at Vatovory (Vinaninkarena, Antsirabe); the site was exploited by open cast mining by the CEA between 1937 and 1954.
