Paul Lazar
(1937-2004)

Paul Joseph Lazar was born in Gary Lake, Indiana on October 26, 1937, the son of Mary Andovich and Anthony Lazar. Paul was a graduate of the University of Denver with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and also the University of Colorado where he earned his MBA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict with rank of PFC. He was a former employee of Sperry/Univac/Unisys as a business-planning manager.

Paul moved from Minnesota to Pennsylvania in the early 1980's. He was a micromounter, and member of the Leidy Microscopical; the Mineralogical Society of Pennsylvania; the Delaware Valley Paleontological Society (serving as president of all three organizations); and the Rock and Mineral Club of Lower Bucks County. He also organized a mineralogical education society through local schools, giving away many starter-collections of 30 labeled specimens.

Paul started collecting minerals in the early 1960's and was active through the mid-1990's, building a collection of more than 12,000 specimens which he displayed in a museum room in his home in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania. He was an avid field collector, going on field trips with his collecting partner Bill Scherpinsky to localities in Canada, Wyoming, Indiana and elsewhere. His collection had worldwide composition with extensive suites of minerals from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut as well as subcollections of barite, native metals, quartz, fluorescent minerals, and fossils. His "display" label (shown here) was used for cases which contained about 600 specimens. The remainder of the collection was stored in cabinets with drawers. He died November 2, 2004, at the age of 67. His collection was dispersed through various mineral dealers and a public sale (on January 14, 2006).
