Nettie Shepard
(1860-1907)

Celia Antonette "Nettie" Shepard, one of the few female mineral collectors in 19th-century America, was born in Southington, Hartford County, Connecticut October 9, 1860, the daughter of James Shepard, a patent solictor, and his wife Celia Adelaide Curtis. The family was living in Bristol, Connecticut in 1870; but by the time of the 1880 census they had moved to New Britain, Connecticut, near Hartford and were still there in 1900. Nettie lived with her parents throughout her life and never married; she may have been an invalid, as she died at the age of 47 on October 26, 1907 in Branford, New Haven County, Connecticut. The disposition of her mineral collection is unknown, but at least some of it may have gone to Yale.
