Harold W. Arndt
(1892-1979)

Harold Wesby Arndt was born September 6, 1892 in East Mauch Chunk, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, the son of Margaret Schwartz and Charles Arndt. His family moved to Chester County, Pennsylvania where he attended Phoenixville High School (graduating in 1911), not far from the famous Wheatley mine. He studied mining engineering at Drexel Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, and following graduation he joined the First Pennsylvania Artillery Division of the U.S. Army, and was stationed in El Paso during the border conflict with Mexico in 1916. Upon leaving the service he settled in Ardmore, Pennsylvania and took a position as design and structural engineer and draftsman for the Belmont Iron Works in Philadelphia (specializing in bridge design and construction), a post he held until his retirement in 1957.

Harold became interested in minerals as a young man, and eventually became one of the best-known amateur mineralogists on the East Coast. He was also an astute botanist, his wife Claire was an ornithologist, and his father-in-law was an avid amateur mineralogist and collector. Harold collected minerals in the field with just about every well-known Eastern mineralogist of his time, including Edgar Wherry, Morrell Biernbaum (Baldwin), Harry Trudell and Sam Gordon. Harold served many terms as President of the Delaware County, Pennsylvania Institute of Science, and was Curator of Minerals at Bryn Mawr College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania from 1958 until his death on November 8, 1979. During the years before 1941 he taught regular classes in geology and mineralogy once a month at the Institute--attracting a class of 30 to 60 students! His worldwide mineral collection of several thousand specimen went to that institution, where volunteers from the Friends of Mineralogy have established the Harold W. Arndt Memorial Hall of Minerals to display his specimens.
