Charles W. Hoadley
(1878-1942)

Charles Wesson Hoadley of Hartford, Connecticut and Englewood, New Jersey was born in New York City on August 10, 1878, the son of Alice Howland Wesson and Russell Hotchkiss Hoadley, a wealthy exporter and banker. He received his early schooling in Westminster, England but later graduated from Columbia University in New York with a degree in architecture. As a member of the architectural firm of Hayes & Hoadley in New York, he specialized in Colonial-style achitecture. He retired in 1932. Hoadley married Harriette Hastings, and together they had two sons (Wells Hastings Hoadley and Charles Edward Hoadley). They later divorced, and he married a woman named Janet Mae.

Hoadley built an extensive mineral collection that was, in its day, one of the best in the country. He traveled widely to obtain the best specimens, whether by self-collecting or by purchase. Part of his collection he gave to a friend in Philadelphia (probably Morrell Biernbaum), and the remaining 600 fine crystal specimens (representing 200 species), as well as his mineralogical library, were sold by his widow Janet Mae Hoadley following his death.

Hoadley wrote "A mineralogical pilgrimage through Connecticut" and "An American occurrence of cronstedtite" for The American Mineralogist in 1917 and 1918, respectively, and with William H. Broadwell (q.v.) he composed a four-page pamphlet on the minerals of Franklin, New Jersey. He was the most important supporter of Rocks & Minerals during its early years, from its inception in 1926, providing financial help as needed, writing articles, and zealously rounding up large numbers of new subscribers on his own. He was a member of numerous organizations including the Mineralogical Club of Hartford (charter member and first treasurer), the New York Mineralogical Club, and the Philadelphia Mineralogical Society. He died February 16, 1942, in Hartford, Connecticut.
