Charles P. Hamilton

Lapidabrade, Inc. was a family-run lapidary, jewelry and mineral business outside the Philadelphia area for over 50 years. The business was started by Charles P. "Charlie" Hamilton's father in the 1950's, out of their home. They later opened a store in Jenkintown, then in Oakmont, and finally in Havertown at two different locations (2407 Darby Road and 8 East Eagle Road), all in Pennsylvania. Customers could select cut gems and settings themselves, then watch as Charlie assembled the pieces to their specifications. He also published a 14-page booklet (from his Ardmore address) entitled The Art of Grinding Gems & Minerals, a Handbook for the Amateur & Professional Lapidary "Prepared as a Service by Lapidabrade."

The shop carried a wide assortment of lapidary supplies, and also stocked mineral specimens of modest quality (though an occasional "sleeper" could sometimes be found). There was a garage behind the shop which also housed mineral specimens, packed away in flats. Charlie Hamilton ran the business until 2003, and has since retired to Maryland. When the Hamiltons retired they didn't advertise the business for sale; they just sold off whatever they could and threw the remaining mineral specimens and other stock in the trash.
