Tom Gressman
(1947-    )

Thomas Michael Gressman was born March 17, 1947 in Milwaukee, the son of Marilyn and Walter Gressman, a lithographer of Bavarian ancestry. He grew up in Wisconsin, graduating from Oconomowoc High School in 1965, and earned his B.S. degree in Philosophy and Chemistry at Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He then went on to Graduate School at Marquette University in Milwaukee, where he studied Philosophy, but left before receiving his degree and entered the banking business.

Tom had developed a strong interest in mineralogy by the age of five, encouraged by an older cousin (a Professor of Geology at the University of Montana) who often presented him with specimens and books. In the early 1970s, with fellow collectors Don Olson and Wendell Wilson, he began attending the Detroit and Tucson Shows, among others, and continued building his collection.

By 1980 Tom had risen to the position of President of a Wisconsin financial institution, but was unsatisfied with life in the Midwest. He left Wisconsin for Colorado, where he took a position with a much larger financial corporation, and again rose to the position of CEO. Minerals were always Tom's passion, and in 2006 he left the banking field to become full-time business associate for Collector's Edge Minerals in Golden, Colorado.

Tom helped out as a volunteer at the Mineralogical Record's annual fund-raising auction every year beginning in 1976, and joined the Board of Directors of The Mineralogical Record, Inc. in 1990, ultimately serving several terms as President. In 2009 he joined the Mineralogical Record staff as Associate Publisher & Development Officer, and now lives near the corporate offices in Tucson.

He has written mineral-related articles for the Mineralogical Record, Le Regne Mineral and Rocks & Minerals, as well as numerous articles and columns for R/C (remote-control) model soaring journals. In addition to mineral collecting, Tom is always ready to discuss ideas in philosophy, technology, sociology, evolution and politics, has a long-standing interest in aerodynamics and competitive remote-control soaring, and is a fan of science fiction. He has three children, Ryan (1978), Andrew (1980) and Kira (1993).
