Albin Jahn
(1886-1946)

Albin Jahn was born March 3, 1886 in Maltin bei Altenburg, Germany. He first studied pharmacy in Altenburg from 1910 to 1913, then in Strasbourg. As a child he collected rocks and minerals, and during the time of his studies in Strasbourg he published a small crystallographic work describing some calcite crystals from a locality in Elsass. In 1913 he opened a mineral business at Oberen Graben 9 in Plauen dealing in European minerals and especially those from Vogtland.

Jahn was not satisfied with the purely commercial side of mineralogy, though, and between the years 1926 and 1933 he wrote a number of smaller, crystallographically oriented works on vogtland minerals. Jahn's studies dealt with, among other things, the minerals of the well-known fluorite pit at Schoenbrunn, with Vogtland wolframite occurrences, and with the different minerals found at Schneckenstein. Many of these works were based on specimens collected during a systematic inspection, in some cases with with W. Jaeger, of the waste dumps of numerous ore deposits between the East Thuringian Schiefergebirge and the Cisarsky Les (Kaiserwald).

Albin Jahn died on April 11, 1946 in Plauen, and his business, Mineralien-Niederlage A. Jahn, was taken over by Anna Jahn. His rich private collection was acquired in 1950 by the National Museum for Mineralogy and Geology in Dresden.
