Marion Godshaw
(1915-1989)

Marion Seigel Godshaw was born in Illinois on December 10, 1915, the daughter of Helen J. Kwait. Helen married Paul M. Seigel, in 1922. Marion graduated from St. Xavier's Academy, a private Catholic school for girls in Chicago, and attended Northwestern University. She married Bernard Godshaw in Chicago in 1942, and they settled in Santa Monica, California. She and her husband ran a shoe store and imported shoes. She was a charter subscriber to the Mineralogical Record in 1970, built a formidable mineral collection of several thousand specimens over the years while mentoring other younger collectors, and occasionally sold mineral specimens under the company name of Specific Mineral Specimens. She was instrumental in starting what was called the Red Carpet Mineral Show in the Santa Monica Civic auditorium which ran for many years, and she knew the prominent and much respected mineral dealer Martin Ehrman well enough to buy specimens from him directly. For many years she was the volunteer advertising manager for American Mineralogist. The MGM ("Marion Godshaw Memorial") quarry was named in her honor in California. She died March 4 (or 31), 1989 in Santa Monica. Her collection was sold for the family by Cal Graeber (q.v.).
