W. F. Gwinnell
(1846-1921)

Prof. Wintour Frederick Gwinnell, BSc, FGS, of the Polytechnic College, Regent Street, London: British geologist and paleontologist, son of Jane (a dressmaker) and George Gwinnell (a cloth worker and warehouseman) of Eastington, Gloucestershire, England; thrice married (1869, 1879, 1896). He wrote a number of published works including Geology in Systematic Notes and Tables (1898), "On a small Plesiosaurus skeleton from the White Lias of Westbury-on-Severn" (1904), and "Report of an excursion to the West Highlands of Scotland and the Isle of Skye" (1912). His fossil and mineral collection, including part of the Charles Ottley Groom (q.v.) collection, went, at least in part, to the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, Scotland around 1920-1922. He died August 26, 1921.
