He traveled widely, especially in Russia, Italy and the Orient.
In 1849 Friedrich Franz married Auguste Reuss zu Schleiz-Köstritz. In 1864, before the German-Danish war broke out, he was offered by king William I the command of the Prussian Army Corps, but he declined. On the one hand he was afraid of an attack against the Mecklenburgian coast by Denmark, and on the other hand the Danish king was his friend. He followed, however, the instructions of Prussian headquarters. In the Franco-German war he served as Commanding General of the 13th Army Corps. Later he took over supreme command of the Army Department, consisting of the Ith Bavarian Army Corps, two Prussian Kavalleriedivisionen and 2 infantry divisions in the area Orléans.
