Karl von Seebach
(1839-1880)

Karl von Seebach was Professor of Mineralogy, Petrography and Paleontology at Georg-August University in Göttingen. He is mentioned in lists of classes dated 1869 to 1879. According to Groth (1885), he died January 21, 1880. His personal library was purchased for the Institute of Geology and Paleontology at Göttingen shortly after his death; his mineral collection was probably purchased, too. The "-sche" ending on a name associated with a collection generally means that an institution now owns the collection and is identifying it wih the name of its original owner. Seebach, who died at the age of 41, had planned a comprehensive monograph on the volcanoes of South America, based on his travels in 1864-1865, however only a small portion of his work was published following his death.
