BLUMHOF, Johann Georg Ludolph.
(1774 - 1825)

(Born: Hannover, Germany, 25 September 1774; Died: Giessen, Germany, 9 May 1825) German engineer & technologist.

In 1805, Blumhof was the administrator of the iron works at Silbach. He was appointed in 1809 metal inspector in Ludwigshütte near Biedenkopf in Ober-Hessen. In 1819, he was named professor of technology at the University of Giessen, where he remained. He was an expert in iron production and authored several authoritative works on the subject.

Very scarce. A general economic geology containing short discussions on minerals, rocks, earths, clays, fuels, etc that are used in arts and manufactures. The first section covers the physical and chemical properties of minerals, which is followed by discussions of individual minerals and gemstones. Each mineral type is discussed in relation to its geological occurrences and their economic importance. Unusual for the time, these discussions are well referenced, with included lists of literature pertaining to the individual species.
