Cornelio A.S. Doelter
DOELTER (CISTERICH Y DE LA TORRE), Cornelio August Severius.

DOELTER (CISTERICH Y DE LA TORRE), Cornelio August Severius.
(1850 - 1930)

(Born: Arroyo, Guayama, Puerto Rico, 16 September 1850; Died: Kolbnitz, Carinthia, Austria, 8 August 1930) Austrian mineralogist & geochemist.

Doelter's father emigrated to Puerto Rico where he married his mother, a wealthy plantation owner. With his mother he moved to Karlsruhe, Baden in 1855, entering the lyceum in 1860. He studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy and geology at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau and at Heidelberg. In 1876, Doelter was appointed assistant professor of mineralogy and petrology at the University of Graz. He was named full professor in 1883. He succeeded G. Tschermak at the University of Vienna in 1911. Through his work in physical-chemical mineralogy, he is considered one of the founders of modern petrology.

Allgemeine chemische Mineralogie, von C. Doelter. Leipzig, W. Engelmann, 1890.

8°: iv, 277, [1] p., illus., diagrams. "Literatur" at head of chapters.

Very scarce. A general discussion of chemical mineralogy, a principal study of the author. Here he presents basic ideas and gives numerous examples that illustrate the application of chemistry to mineral science. Allgemeine chemische Mineralogie collects together all facts pertaining to chemical mineralogy and presents the information in a logical order. After a discussion of crystal structure and its relation to chemistry and isomorphism, simple methods of chemical analysis are described. Then the author presents the subject of mineral synthesis in a lengthy section. He defines his terminology carefully and carries it forward in his text. He divides the synthesis into two parts: recrystallization of mineral substances already prepared, and production of minerals and their crystallization. Under each are given practical methods, followed by brief comments on the results of experimentation. Nearly every synthesis that had been published up to the time may be traced with the aid of this book. The last sections of the volume deal with chemical changes affected by temperature, the action of solvents, the forms of minerals in nature, and the chemical constitution of minerals.

Scarce. A pioneering textbook covering physical and chemical mineralogy. Along with J.H.L. Vogt, Doelter is credited with cofounding a new discipline which can be directly traced to the modern day studies of geochemistry and to a lesser extent petrology. Topics of the volume include cystal structure, size of crystal molecules, polymorphism, isomorphism, relationship between chemistry and crystallography, and the relationship between a mineral's hardness and its chemistry.

Rare, especially in complete sets. One of the great compilations in mineralogy, this work published over the course of twenty years included chemical-mineralogical descriptions from many collaborators, but Doelter authored about half of the material. Originally the work was intended to be completed by 1914 in two or three volumes, but the good reception of the first sections and the large number of new mineral species discovered during its publication, caused the Handbuch der Mineralchemie to balloon. The series' focus was on the chemistry of the minerals with little attention paid the natural occurrences of the species, and although of interest to mineralogists it is actually more important as a compilation in the early history of geochemistry studies. Each volume has its own author and subject index, while the final volume contains a general index to the complete work. H. Leitmeier became a coeditor in 1925 and after Doelter's death full editor on the last volume.
