Very scarce. Description of the first "Knallgebläses," (oxygen gas blowpipe) of Ehrmann after Lavoisier's design, and containing numerous interesting and original experiments in smelting procedures. It was considered important enough to be translated by order of the French Academy [which see next entry].

Scarce. This is a French translation by de Fontallard of Versuch einer Schmelzkunst mit Beyhülfe der Fenerluft (Strassburg, 1786). It embodies Ehrmann's experiments on fusion, which includes one of the earliest descriptions and illustrations of the oxygen blowpipe, which would become important in high temperature study of minerals. Ehrmann was a correspondent of Lavoisier, who conducted a series of experiments on the effects of high temperature on various substances. Lavoisier requested that his own memoirs on the subject be reprinted together with the translation of Ehrmann's Essai. De Fontallard compiled and added them at the end of the book (pp. 235-349) together with a mémoire by Meusnier that describes and illustrates the apparatus used by both Lavoisier and Ehrmann in their expermients (pp. 350-366).

Jean François de Fontallard. French translator. Acted as translator on several works during the period 1770 to 1790.
