ELDERHORST, William.
(1828 - 1861)

(Born: Hannover, Germany, 30 September 1828; Died: Maracaibo, Venezuela, 28 July 1861) German chemist.

Elderhorst was the son of an army officer, and consequently began his career as a military cadet. He was released from service, however, due to weak eyesight. Thereafter, he studied chemistry at the University of Göttingen. In 1853, Elderhorst emmigrated to The United States and worked in drugstores in Charleston, South Carolina and New York City. He also gave private instruction in chemistry. In 1855, he was appointed professor of theoretical and practical chemistry at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In this capacity, he was an important insturment in transferring the techniques of the German chemical school to his American students.
