Christoph W.J. Gatterer
GATTERER, Christoph Wilhelm Jacob.

GATTERER, Christoph Wilhelm Jacob.
(1759 - 1838)

(Born: Göttingen, Germany, 2 December 1759; Died: Heidelberg, Germany, 11 September 1838) German mineralogist, naturalist & bibliographer.

Son of the great German historian, Johann Christoph Gatterer [1727-1799]. Christoph studied mineralogy and natural science at Göttingen, receiving his advanced degree in 1778. He then accepted a position as professor of "Kameral"-science and technology at the University of Heidelberg in 1787. In 1795, he entered the diplomatic corp.

Anleitung den Harz und andere Bergwerke mit nuzzen zu bereisen. Gottingen, im Verlag der Wittwe Bandenhoeck, 1785-94.

5 vols. [Vol 1: 1785] 8°: x, [6], 366, 26 p. [Vol 2: 1786] 8°: [18], 314, [46] p. [Vol 3: 1790] 8°: [Vol 4: 1793] 8°: [Vol 5: 1794] 8°:

Rare. This five volume series is an early and important account of the Harz Mountains of Germany emphasizing the natural history of the region. Mining had occurred in the Harz since at least the 10th century and these volumes describe the mineral resources of the area including its copper, gold, silver and lead mines and the techniques for processing metals from their ores. Gatterer an instinctive bibliographer also provides extensive citations to other works regarding the Harz Mountains and mining in general. This work also contains much on the local animals and plants of the region. This appears to be a rare work especially in complete sets.

Contents: Vol 1: Berg- und Hüttenwesen allgemein. Vol 2: Flora, Fauna, Geologie, Klima der Region (with a Harz-Bibliography). Vol 3: Beiträge zur Geschichte des Harzes, das heißt von den unter- und oberharzischen Bergwerken. Vols 4-5: Beschreibung des Harzes.

Rare. The first portion is a general bibliography of mineralogy, mining, minting, and salt containing some minor biographical information. This part originally appeared in 1785 but was very much expanded and published again in 1787, and this is the more common issue. In the meantime, the second part focusing on the Harz region of Germany and its mining bibliography was published in 1786. However, this work was eclipsed by Gatterer's Allgemeines Repertorium that is described in the next entry.

Very rare. One of the great bibliographies of mineralogy and mining published in the eighteenth century. Particularly useful for its completeness, the bibliography's entries are broken into broad categories of historical works, bibliographies, deterministic mineralogy, crystallography, systems of classification, monographs on specific species, and topographical. Many of the entries contain references to contemporary reviews as well as Gatterer's succinct comments about the value of the listed title. Throughout the work liberal use is made of cross referencing, and at the end of volume two are extensive name and subject indexes.
