He was named professor of skin and mental diseases of Santa Maria Nuova in 1802, becoming superintendent in 1818. Chiarugi is considered the father of Italian clinical psychiatry. He was the first in Europe to stop using chains and fetters in treating the insane, instead developing new methods and reforming the old methods.

Rare. Although this title was published anonymously, it is generally attributed to be the work of Chiarugi. It is a treatise of mineralogical classification designed for use by the late eighteenth century collector of minerals. The text is based upon the natural history method, then prevailing throughout the science, and consists of a synopsis of the classification scheme. From the text it is inferred that the author had classified his own mineral collection according to the outlined method.
