HACQUET, Balthasar.
(c1739 - 1815)

(Born: c1739; Died: Vienna, Austria, 10 January 1815) Austrian naturalist, mineralogist & geologist.

In 1778, Hacquet was appointed a professor at the University of Laibach, which were followed by appointments at the Universities of Lemberg in 1785 and Krakau in 1805. He was a naturalist and is regarded as one of the first true Alpine geologists.

Rare. The author's remarkable work of paleontology, mountaineering and botany from a decidedly geological and mineralogical point of view. It is a valuable study of the most eastern range of the Alps with extraordinary illustrations (some panoramic views) depicting ethnographic observations of regional inhabitants in their native costumes, and detailed descriptions of the local flora, fauna, and other botanics, as well as stratigraphic renderings of stones, ore, minerals and fossils. Each of the four volumes describes the travels for a number of years. For example, I. 1788 and 1789; II. 1788, 89 and 90; III. 1791, 92 and 93; IV. 1794 and 95.
